"Building Capacity and Competency in Entrepreneurship Education"

Hosted by CBEA of Miriam College, the Entrepreneur Educators Association of the Philippines-NCR (ENEDA NCR), in collaboration with its student organization counterpart, Young Entrepreneur Society (YES), held the first of its kind conference entitled:

"Building Capacity and Competency in Entrepreneurship Education"
at the Marian Auditorium last Nov. 29.

The 1st Regional Conference was attended by over 750 entrepreneurship educators, deans, directors and students from Miriam College, University of the East, San Beda College, San Sebastian, Far Eastern University – Morayta, University of Santo Tomas, Centro Escolar University, St. Paul Quezon City, De La Salle-Araneta, Letran, among others.

The gathering sought to strengthen and build the capabilities and capacities of ENEDA-NCR in raising the bar of professional competency in entrepreneurship education. The conference presented ENEDA's national thrusts and directions and the value of entrepreneurship educators in nation-building by Dr. Antonio Lopez, ENEDA National President and Program Director of Miriam College. Support programs from various government agencies: the Department of Trade and Industry – Bureau of Small and Medium Development (DT-BSMED); Technology Resource Center (TRC); the Department of Science and Technology , and its DATBED program were highlighted to give the educators and students how they can help transform project ideas of students into successful entrepreneurial ventures in various stages of its development.

The research findings on Teaching Practices, Needs and Gaps was presented to the educators showing what students want and don't want in the teaching delivery of their professors. It also highlighted the educators and school administrations' wish list in better partnership for teaching.

The Research Reactors, Dr. Paterno Viloria of Small Enterprises Research and Development or SERDEF, Dr. Helena Cabrera of the University of Santo Tomas, Dean Maricon Lupisan of Miriam College and Dr. Elenita Aguirre of Far Eastern University reiterated once more the need to improve teaching delivery, continuing curriculum review, course management, student management, the need for a stronger mentoring program including personality enhancement program among others. More importantly, Dr. Viloria noted that indeed schools and educators should work on delivering results which the entrepreneurship course is all about – developing and producing entrepreneurs far beyond graduation!

The findings helped in fortifying the program draft on Competency Program Proposal for Entrepreneurship Educators for future grant from various agencies that shares its commitment in advancing entrepreneurship education by Maria Luisa Benig-Gatchalian, President of ENEDA NCR Chapter. This early, it has drawn support from the Institute for Small Scale Industries (ISSI) and SERDEF.

The research endeavor was led by Miriam College with the participation of Far Eastern University, Morayta; San Beda, San Sebastian, University of Santo Tomas, and St Paul College Quezon City and supported in part by Mind Mover Publishing House.

The educators were also presented with the use of modern technologies for a more efficient, exciting, engaging and effective teaching delivery by Canon and Microdata. International publishers: Cengage, McGraw Hill, Pearson and Wiley and Sons presented their programs for textbook/teacher support through book adoption precisely to build on the educators' proficiency, competency and capacity enhancement. Educators as representatives of their schools were provided with the most recent books on entrepreneurship and related courses from these international publishers for evaluation.

The YES-NCR students on the other hand was presented with a feature of young entrepreneurs who shared their insights on the hurdles of starting, operating, as well as the challenges of sustaining the business produced by Miriam students led by Sha Sinsuat, who is affiliated with the Bayan Productions. Among the young entrepreneurs featured were Gio Gatchalian of Island Soul distributor of Terra Plana; Gian Carlo Sim of Yey Café; Rock Drilon of Magnet; BJ Ang of Networx JetSport and off cam Tintin Bersola.

All these young entrepreneurs dazzled the students with their inspiring minds and entrepreneurial spirit which revolves around the value of work, industry, commitment, people, focus, love for what one is doing, decisiveness, healthy perspective of giving, sharing and in taking.

This one-day event also showcased the YES student product prototypes in an exhibition in Miriam campus ground This convergence of educators, students, and various agencies is one big leap in truly advancing entrepreneurship education, development and wealth creation that goes beyond material gain.

Through an apt educators professional program, wealth creation is a
program that realizes the value of educators in their part in the process human resource development. Educators are the key in exciting students to generate ideas as it is slowly transformed into the various stages of venture development. They use their mind, soul and passion to teach human skills for job creation and usher the students' metamorphosis to becoming entrepreneurs who are socially, ethically, spiritually empowered and responsible Filipino citizens.

ENEDA-NCR is a non-stock, non-profit organization dedicated to
promoting Entrepreneurship Education.

The conference also was made possible through the generosity of Miriam community, the families and friends of the Entrepreneurship students and faculty.
